Bare, uncoated concrete structures in zoos, aquariums, and fish hatcheries can be hard to clean and may cause water quality issues due to the alkaline nature of concrete. Madewell^®'s unreinforced polymer lining systems prevent these water quality issues by providing a smooth, nontoxic, and easy to clean surface. Mainstay^® ML-72 or ML-72P Sprayable Microsilica Mortar is used to smooth rough, deteriorated concrete on older structures. Mortar is not required if the structure is new or has not experienced deterioration. Instead, Madewell 1312P Trowelable or 1312P Sprayable Epoxy Surfacer & Void Filler may be used to fill bugholes and voids prior to coating application.

Madewell Unreinforced Lining System

This system is designed to fill voids and bugholes in new concrete and incorporates the following products:

1. Madewell 927 Penetrating Epoxy Primer & Sealer
2. Madewell 1312P Sprayable Epoxy Surfacer & Void Filler for applications where a thin coat of epoxy is sufficient to fill bugholes and voids in concrete or Madewell 1312P Trowelable Epoxy Surfacer & Void FIller for applications where a thicker coat of epoxy is necessary to smooth rough concrete surfaces.
3. Madewell 1312S 100% Solids Epoxy Coating at 10-20 mils (0.010" to 0.020") in one or two coats or Mainstay DS-5-S Medium Build 100% Solids Epoxy Coating at 20-50 mils (0.020" to 0.050") in one or two coats.
4. Madewell manufatures topcoats suitable for different types of applications: Madewell 525 Polycarbamide Coating, Madewell 1450 Aliphatic Polyurethane Coating, or Madewell 1550 Fluorinated Polyurethane Coating. Madewell 1450 and 1550 may be used in conjunction with one another depending on the application.*

Madewell Unreinforced Lining System with Mortar

This system is designed to restore deteriorated or rough concrete surfaces and incorporates the following products:

1. Mainstay ML-72 Sprayable Microsilica Restoration Mortar at 1/2" to 2" thick or Mainstay ML-72 HP Sprayable Microsilica Mortar at 1/8" to 1/2" thick, depending on the application.
2. Madewell 927 Penetrating Epoxy Primer & Sealer
3. Madewell 1312S 100% Solids Epoxy Coating at 10-20 mils (0.010" to 0.020") in one or two coats or Mainstay DS-5-S Medium Build 100% Solids Epoxy Coating at 20-50 mils (0.020" to 0.050") in one or two coats.

*Color stability and gloss of Madewell 1450 would be extended by the use of a clear coat of 1550 or in cases where chlorine is used for disinfection. Pigmented versions of Madewell 1550 do not perform well when exposed to both chlorine and strong ultraviolet light. For service conditions where both chlorine and strong ultraviolet light are present, a clear (unpigmented) coat of Madewell 1550 provides optimal performance.
